Lately I’ve grown so frustrated at the major online newspapers not allowing you to link to archived articles. (Hint to New York Times: $2.50 per archived article is not a reasonable fee). It’s getting to the point where I’m loathe to link to sites which have the ability to move the link to a pay-only section. I’ve made the point before that book reviews by major reviewers, for example, are almost impossible to find, causing (for example) my essay on Gao Xingjian’s Soul Mountain Novel to pop up higher on search results than almost any other book review on the subject. Interestingly though, Amazon usually appears pretty high on search results, which is probably the reason why they haven’t bought unrestricted access to reviews, as IMDB did with movie reviews.
