Over the Hill writers

NY Times does an “expose” (translation: promo piece) on a “scandal (translation: PR bonanza) involving a 19 year old writer. This came months after another “expose” of another “scandal” about Melissa P., a 17 year old writer who wrote a pornographic novel. Gosh, it makes me think that if you haven’t written your first novel by 20, you are way over the hill.

The thing is guys can’t write about sex and expect to be commercial; they could have more commercial success talking about their former life as a gang member or computer cracker.

Update: here’s a far more interesting analysis by Shane Wilson  of the issues.  Turns out the problem is less with the author herself than the agency subcontracted to package the book for her.
