Isn't Kristin Hersh great? I love the way her voice has evolved since Throwing Muses. So raspy. You might enjoy her work at CCMixter. Another place to explore for free music is bandcamp.com.
No frills, but much more artist friendly than jamendo.

And of course, there is the Free Music Archive.
