A new House bill proposes penalties of $250,000 for each copyrighted file shared and makes the crime a felony.
Given the fact that I’ve probably shared a good 1000 mp3’s files (note to federal enforcers: I’m only joking–I never share any files ever ), that means I would be liable to pay 250 million dollars. Oops!
Many states have mandatory sentencing laws. California, for example, has a “3 Strikes you’re out” which imposes mandatory life imprisonment for anyone who has committed 3 felonies. (This law was recently upheld as constitutional by the US Supreme Court). Therefore, if I am caught sharing copyrighted files three times in California, I will be in prison for the rest of my life!
