I think it would be pretty idiotic to believe that pain is limited to higher animals. It is of use to all motile creatures to induce them to respond to damaging stimuli. But that general observations doesn’t cause me to give a rat’s backside about the pain a fish gets when I hook him. Too bad for the fish; that’s just “nature red in tooth and claw” at work.
