 | Time: 12:04AM (12:04 AM ) Name(s): Break-dancing girl at the Mobil Gas Station Dance Moves/Style: *** Probably the best of the whole 24 hours. Lots of break dancing and running back and forth. Spirit: *** Very expressive. Visuals: ** What’s nice is that her appearance (dress, etc) doesn’t particularly stand out at the beginning, so when she bursts into this long dance, it really is a shock! Use of Space/Cinematography: ** (Unfortunately parts of this segment are too dark) Extras/Comments: This segment amazes me on many levels. First, although the dancing is extraordinary and has a lot of flourishes, it stays natural the whole time (well, except for the somersaults!). Second, her moves are really fast and involve so many combinations that it’s a joy to keep track. A very fun moment comes when she taps against a car with a passenger inside, and when the driver returns, he gazes sheepishly at her the whole time. (Actually the whole place has a lot of spectators). Also, note the cameo of the gasoline tanker! |

Tuggle (aka that guy who dances in the Black Keye’s Lonely Boy video) Dance Moves/Style: * Spirit/Energy: * (His character is to stay composed and suave — so we wouldn’t expect lots of smiles here) Visuals/Dress: ** The brightly lit colors of the shop are a pleasing backdrop. Use of Space/Cinematography: * The camera operator made the mistake of trying to shoot from too far out. Like the Lonely Boy vid, it should have stayed relatively close to the dancer who makes mainly tight moves Extras: A very toned-down performance, but some wacky knee moves and a strange kind of waving. |
 | Time 12:24 AM (12:24 AM ) Name (s): Angela Trimbur, aka the Dance like No One’s Watching Girl (See here and here). Dance Moves/Style: *** (actually more like 2 1/2 stars because some of the moves seem artificial). But the part where she dances with the gas pump is destined to be a classic moment. Loved the play she twirled around with the wind shield wiping pole too. Spirit/Energy: *** Visuals/Dress: *** Nice outfit, plus you can’t beat the brightly lit colors of the gas station. Use of Space/Cinematography: *** Although I wasn’t a fan of her crawling on the cement, I definitely appreciated the way the camera did a 360 around her during that moment. Extras: I’m torn about this one. Obviously a great dancer, but her dance moves seem a little too artificial and ostentatious; was it really necessary to crawl over the cement? On the other hand, she was really pushing boundaries here and had some spectacular energy and moves. I guess nobody ever criticized Busby Berkeley for making his dancers do so many floor moves. Probably tied for the best of the hour with 12:04am. (Check out her other dances in the links I provided above) |
